At each scale, Matches projects the design to commercial operation. This typically includes capital and operating costs for several production rates. This focuses development effort and decisions.

Process development is well suited for deveoping ideas into commercial processes. For example consider the development of a process to recover oil and torrefied wood pellets from fresh cut red cedar biomass. Red cedar samples are tested in a laboratory. The results suggested the design for a small commercial unit with expected yields. This combined with a heat balance and market analysis suggested that the concept would be profitable.
