Oklahoma Metallurgical & Mining Section of SME

Welcome to the Oklahoma Section of the Society of Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc. (SME).  The Oklahoma Section is one of 70 local sections of the Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc. (SME).  SME is a nonprofit organization of 13,000 members in industry, academia and government providing leadership in the mining profession.  SME has four divisions -a Coal Division, an Environmental Division, an Industrial Minerals Division, a Mining and Exploration Division and a Mineral and Metallurgical Processing Division.   SME was founded in 1871 as American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, Inc. (AIME),  In 1957, AIME split into three branches - SME, TMS and SPE.   In 1974, AIME added a fourth branch - ISS.   SME provides a forums to advance the theory and practice of the profession, upholds high professional standards and ethics, and supports excellence in education.     

The Oklahoma Section was founded in 1969 and presently has nearly 150 members/associate members including entry-level engineers, staff engineers, professional engineers, managers and chief executive officers of corporations in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Section covers all of  Oklahoma. Through meetings, tours, community and government interaction, section members obtain cutting edge information, interact with students and make local connections that keep them knowledgeable and competitive in their industry.  Local section activities include:

bulletHold meetings on a variety of topics with guest speaker.   Some meetings include plant tours that demonstrate mining and engineering applications.
bulletHold continuing education seminars, professional and technical training courses,   community outreach, and social events.
bulletMeet and affiliate with other professionals to exchange information, develop business relationships and learn about trends in the field and local companies.
bulletRepresent the mining profession to government and regulatory officials through events like Engineer's Day at the Capital.
bulletEducate the general public about the role of mining as guest speakers.
bulletProvide career development information to students and professionals.
bulletRecognize and encourage excellence by promoting members for national awards.
bulletKeep its members informed and encourage involvement through regular newsletters and the section web site.
bulletEducate and encourage college and K-12 students, through events like Engineering Fair and National Engineers Week.
